It was with a bit of sadness last week that we turned off the power of an old friend, OVS.   About 5 years ago we deployed a service specifically designed for eCommerce Fraud Analysts to use when manually reviewing orders.   OVS, (Order Verification System) was a great tool and lived and grew through several major releases.   But as eventually happens to all things, something newer, faster, younger, prettier and better comes along and takes their place.  &... Companies And Individuals

by Scott Rice12/28/2012 12:30:00 PM

I was reminded again this week how companies are not disembodied entities but assemblies of individuals.  The reminder came while shopping for a specialty prescription medication for my ailing mother-in-law.   My wife spent hours (not the figurative kind, the literal kind) on the phone with one pharmacy trying to order the correct medication.  What is normally a simple process performed mostly by the doctor can get a lot more complicated with very rare, expensive medications ... Human Hacking and the Art of Social Engineering

by ptaylor12/20/2011 12:20:00 PM

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. Social Engineering is the most effective way to 'hack' or gain access to an organization. Here are just a few of the methods that fraudsters are using to trick consumers into revealing important information. Pretexting - Creating an invented (prepared) scenario (an elaborate lie) to engage a victim and convince them to divulge information. Phishing - Sending something that loo... [More]

A Holiday Letter to PacificEast

by Scott Rice12/15/2011 1:44:00 PM

(The following is Walter Funk's recent address to the staff and management of PacificEast. I think it encapsulates the character of the company and what we strive for. It is our Christmas wish this year to focus even more diligently on these four values.) On the PacificEast sign on the wall in our office we list four values: Teamwork, Integrity, Innovation, and Excellence. I'm not reviewing them today because we have lost sight of them, but in an attempt to ensure that we never do. We are one c... [More]

Advice for Fundraisers As We Near the 3 Year Anniversary of the Economic Downturn

by Scott Rice9/15/2011 11:09:00 AM

I remember hearing my parents and grandparents discuss where they were when Kennedy was assassinated. In just a few days we'll probably be asking each other where we were on 9/11. A more recent "where were you when" question might be "where were you when Lehman Brothers collapsed?" It's odd to look back and realize that was almost 3 years ago. I remember hearing pundits say the economy would take years to recover. I didn't believe them. I was wrong. Let's face it, it's been a tough time to gro... [More]

Upcoming Webinar: "The Four Cornerstones of Identity: The Art and Science of Verification"

by Scott Rice9/2/2011 9:00:00 AM

In just a few weeks, during the last week of September, PacificEast Research will be producing a webinar about Verification. "Verification", like the words "sale", "dessert" and "surprise" is an ambiguous noun that could mean just about anything. Marketers may love words like this, but if you're trying to find a way to test the quality and correctness of your data, or assure yourself that information a prospect is providing you is correct you may want to register for this one hour webinar. The e... [More]
